King James v2.0

Posted: December 12th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Articles, Design, Images | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

Since taking his talents to South Beach, LeBron has been under the microscope like never before. You couldn’t turn on a sports radio show without hearing someone’s opinion on “The Decision”. Really, the only thing I hadn’t heard about regarding LeBron was how is brand and logo would change. If you’ve flipped through a magazine, looked at online advertising or seen a television commercial sometime in the last few years, chances are you’ve seen Nike’s “King James 23″ logo. As we all know, it’s not always a great idea to change your identity when it’s so well known but since his move to the warmer client he’s had a jersey number change. That means “23″ was no longer an option and a new logo was needed.

LBJ Logo

Not too bad, eh? I honestly never really enjoyed the old logo. It’s not that it wasn’t well done or kind of creative, it’s just that it never really spoke to me. Now this new logo, that’s a totally different story. I think it looks great. It’s simple, understated, easy to understand and very marketable. As you will see in the images after the jump, this logo lends it’s self to being implemented pretty much anywhere. It’s not too tall & and it’s not too wide. It’s almost the perfect size.

Even though I do really enjoy this logo, I still don’t know if I’ll be picking up any merchandise. Obviously, this isn’t because of the logo it’s self, it’s more of a comment on how I feel about the athlete it represents. That my friends, is another blog post all together.

What’s old is brand new again

Posted: November 23rd, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Articles | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

The whole “retro” thing has been a pretty big merchandising side of sports marketing for a while now. Everything from the NBA Hardwood Classic series of jerseys to the MLB’s Diamond Collection hats. Retro is cool. For some it’s a great way to show team or player loyalty, for others it’s a great way to relive old memories of games past and for some it’s all about the fashion.

It seems the Toronto Blue Jays are going a step further and embracing their legacy in more than just selling retro hats and jerseys. I was visiting a few of my regular favorites online this morning and came across the new Blue Jay’s look at Brand New. The current, more modern looking logo that the Blue Jays have been using for a few seasons, is being shelved in favour of a slightly modified version of their inaugural look. I personally think it’s a great step forward and am looking forward to seeing this new look next season. I’ll probably even buy a hat or two. The subtle Canadian touch with the maple leaf is great. I will be honest though, I’m still more of a fan of the original from the 70′s. That said, I see this as a homerun for our only professional ball team here up north.

Click through to see a comparison between the 70′s logo and the new design. Also included is the 2 alternate versions of the brand new logo.

Galaxy Nexus Review – Is it time for a change?

Posted: November 22nd, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Articles, Gadgets, Videos | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

If you know me than you know I’m a pretty big fan of most Apple products. I wouldn’t say I’m a “fanboy” but rather someone who enjoys products that work as advertised and is willing to spend a little extra for something that’s worth it. After seeing the reviews trickling out re: the Galaxy Nexus from Google, I think there might be one less Apple product in my gadget lineup.

Truth be told I’ve been looking for a reason to jump ship for a while. I’m the kind of tech guy that gets complacent real quick and am always looking for the next best thing. Up until now the next best thing has been the Apple iPhone when it comes to the smartphone market. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly do love my iPhone 4. It’s never really let me down and does pretty much everything I could want. I guess I’m just having that 7 year itch and Marilyn happens to be walking by…

Special thanks to the guys over at TheVerge.com for doing such amazing work and putting up such quality reviews!

The Insane Clown Posse

While drinking our morning coffee here in the office, many topics get discussed. Everything from local sports teams to the stock market to the Insane Clown Posse. That’s right – almost nothing is off topic while consuming our morning jet fuel. What started as a bit of a downer while discussing a young man found dead after the latest annual “Gathering of the Juggalos Festival” held in Cave-Rock, Illinois, soon turned comedy when discussing one of their latest music videos. A song that has garnered over 7.8 million views on YouTube entitled “Miracles” has been a smash success for ICP, but probably not for the reasons they hoped. While watching the video it’s almost impossible not too laugh. With lines like “Water, Fire, Air & Dirt / F&*king magnets, how do they work?” I dare you not to at least crack a smile.

In a very strange turn of events, out of no where, a friend then sent me a link to a spoof of the “Miracles” video created by SNL entitled ”Magical Mysteries”. Most times when they take on a parody it’s very easy to see decide which video is the real one and which is the fake. This time though, it’s not that obvious. Please enjoy both videos posted below.

Even though I’m an Oilers & Leafs fan, these commercials are great. Very creative and a ton of fun. I wish more teams would put this kind of effort into marketing their teams. Enjoy!

c/dock

This is a very simple, very elegant iPhone docking station. It seems it would be a perfect fit for both home and office. Head over to kickstarter.com and watch the video for some background on the product as well as some other uses. The simplicity here is very cool. This might be my first ever Kickstarter purchase!

Instant classic. I was once, and honestly still am for the most part, a fan of Adam Sandler. But even I can’t stand up for him after seeing this. Yikes.
